Walk-Around Inspection
Inspect Machine
For operator personal safety, to prevent fires, and to ensure maximum service life of the machine, make a thorough walk-around inspection before mounting the machine. Look under and around the machine for such items as loose or missing bolts and trash build-up. Look for oil, fuel or coolant leaks, and condition of bucket, teeth and tracks.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin. At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury. |
- 1. Inspect the implements, cylinders and linkage for damage or excessive wear. Inspect for any cracks in boom and stick pivot area and cylinder mounting brackets. Repair if damaged.
- 2. Inspect the lights for broken bulbs and lenses. Replace if broken.
- 3. Inspect and remove any trash buildup in the engine compartment.
- 4. Inspect the cooling system for leaks, faulty hoses and trash buildup. Correct any leaks and remove any trash from radiator.
- 5. Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks. Inspect the tank, hoses, tubes, plugs, joints and fittings. Correct any leaks.
- 6. Inspect the track, sprockets and idlers for damage, looseness and excessive wear. Correct if needed.
- 7. Be sure the covers and guards are firmly in place. Inspect for damage.
- 8. Inspect the steps, walkways and handholds for their condition and cleanliness. Inspect the Falling Object Protective Structure (FOPS) for damage. Repair if necessary. Tighten any loose FOPS bolts.
- 9. Inspect the operator's compartment for cleanliness. Keep it clean.
- 10. Inspect the instrument panel for broken gauges and indicator lights. Replace if broken.
Always check the condition of the seat belt and mounting hardware before operating the machine. Personal injury could occur if belt failed. Replace after every three years of use. |
- 11. Inspect the seat belt and mounting hardware.
Cooling System
Check Coolant Level
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury. |
- 1. Open the radiator cap access door on the left rear upper panel.
- 2. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure.
- 3. Maintain the coolant level to within 1 cm (1/2 inch) of the bottom of the fill pipe. If it is necessary to add coolant daily, check for leaks.
- 4. Replace the cap if the seal is damaged. Install the cap and close the access door.
Air Cleaner Precleaner
Check for Dirt
- 1. Inspect for accumulation of dust in the precleaner bowl.
- 2. If dust is to the FULL mark, loosen the wingnut and remove the cap.
- 3. Empty the bowl. Wipe the cap and bowl with a clean rag.
- 4. Install the precleaner bowl and cap. Tighten the wingnut.
Periodically wash the entire precleaner with clean, warm water.
Engine Crankcase
Check Oil Level
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin. |
NOTICE |
---|
Do not overfill the crankcase to avoid engine damage. |
- 1. Unlatch and open the left rear access door.
- 2. Remove the dipstick to measure the oil level. The level can be measured with two methods.
The oil level must be in the SAFE STARTING RANGE on the ENGINE STOPPED side of the dipstick.
The oil level must be between the ADD and FULL marks on the ENGINE RUNNING side of the dipstick.
- 3. Remove the oil fill plug and add oil if necessary.
- 4. Clean and install the fill plug.
- 5. Close the access door.
Fuel Tank
Drain Moisture and Sediment
Open the fuel tank access cover.
Fill the fuel tank at the end of each day to drive out moisture laden air. Fill it with at least enough fuel for a shift.
Do not fill the tank to the top. Fuel expands when it gets warm and can overflow.
Drain moisture and sediment from the fuel tank at the start of each shift or after the tank has been filled and allowed to stand for 5 to 10 minutes.
Open the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Allow the moisture and sediment to drain. Close the valve and access cover.
Fault Alarm System
Test
- 1. Turn on the battery disconnect switch
- 2. Move and hold the system's test switch to TEST position.
The master fault light (1) and air and hydraulic oil filter indicators (2) should light.
Have necessary repairs made if lights do not come on.
Travel Alarm - If Equipped
Test
The machine must be moved to test the alarm.
- 1. Start the engine. Raise the boom high enough to clear obstacles. Watch the overhead clearance.
- 2. Depress the right travel pedal to move the machine forward toward the idlers.
- 3. The travel alarm, located under the rear of the upper structure, should sound.
- 4. Release the right travel pedal. Depress the left travel pedal to move toward the sprockets. The alarm should sound.
- 5. Push in the button on top of the steering control while moving. The alarm should stop after 10 seconds when moving in either direction.
- 6. Stop the machine. Lower the equipment. Engage the hydraulic and directional lock lever. Stop the engine.
- 7. The sound level can be adjusted by moving adjustment on back of alarm to meet operating requirements.
The level is usually set on HIGH when the machine is shipped from the factory.
