5130B Excavator Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change Caterpillar

Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change
`

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with the bare hand.

Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.

----------------------

NOTICE

Mixing Extended Life Coolant (ELC) with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only AVSpare products or commercial products that have passed the AVSpare EC-1 specification for premixed or concentrate coolants. Use only AVSpare Extender with AVSpare ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in the damage to cooling systems components.

Location of drain valve (4) for the cooling system coolant

  1. Heater shutoff valves (2) are located near the front of the engine on the right side. Open the heater shutoff valves if the valves are closed.

    NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "AVSpare Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in AVSpare machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Drain valve (3) is located under the machine on the right side by the air dryer desiccant cartridge. Open the drain valve and allow the cooling system coolant to drain into a suitable container.

Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" for information on containing fluid spillage.

Note: Always discard drained fluids according to local regulations.

  1. Close drain valve (3). Fill the cooling system with clean water and a 6% to 10% solution of cooling system cleaner.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine for 90 minutes.

  1. Stop the engine.

  1. Open drain valve (3) in order to drain the cleaning solution.

  1. Flush the cooling system with clean water until the draining water is clean.

  1. Close drain valve (3) .

  1. Add the Extended Life Coolant to the cooling system.

Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, "AVSpare Machines Fluids Recommendations" for the correct type of coolant.

Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the correct volume of coolant.

Note: Do not add an additive to the coolant if you are using AVSpare antifreeze. AVSpare antifreeze contains additives for the cooling system.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine until the thermostat opens and the coolant level stabilizes.

  1. Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (0.5 inch) of the bottom of the filler pipe. If additional coolant is necessary, add the appropriate coolant solution.

  1. Install radiator caps (1) .

  1. If the cab heater is not required, close heater shutoff valves (3) .
