5230B Excavator Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change Caterpillar

Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change
`
1.1. Jacket Water Cooling System
2.1. Water Cooled Aftercooler System

------ WARNING! ------

Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "AVSpare Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on AVSpare products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the Cooling System Specifications section.

NOTICE

Mixing Extended Life Coolant (ELC) with other products reduces the effectiveness of the coolant and shortens coolant life. Use only AVSpare products or commercial products that have passed the AVSpare EC-1 specifications for premixed or for concentrate coolants. Use only AVSpare Extender with AVSpare ELC. Failure to follow these recommendations could result in the damage to cooling system components.

If ELC cooling system contamination occurs, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250, "AVSpare Machine Fluids Recommendations" under the topic of ELC Cooling System Contamination.

This machine was factory filled with Extended Life Coolant.

Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or whenever foaming is observed.

Jacket Water Cooling System

Note: The jacket water cooling system contains 60 percent of the cooling capacity of the machine.

  1. Open the drain valve for the jacket water cooling system. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.

  1. Close the drain valve. Fill the system with clean water and a 6% to 10% concentration of cooling system cleaner.

  1. Start the engine and operate the engine for 90 minutes. Check the cooling system for leaks. Stop the engine and drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.

  1. When the engine is stopped, flush the system with water until the draining water is clear. Drain the water into a suitable container.

  1. Close the drain valve.

  1. Add the Extended Life Coolant to the cooling system.

Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6250, "AVSpare Machines Fluids Recommendations" for the correct type of coolant.

Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the correct volume of coolant.

  1. Start the engine. Run the engine without the radiator cap. Run the engine until the thermostat opens and the coolant level stabilizes. If necessary, add coolant.

Note: Do not add an additive to the coolant if you are using AVSpare antifreeze. AVSpare antifreeze contains additives for the cooling system.

  1. Install the radiator cap. Close the access door.

  1. If the cab heater is not required, close the heater shutoff valves.

Water Cooled Aftercooler System

Note: The water cooled aftercooler system contains 40 percent of the cooling capacity of the machine.

  1. Open the drain valve for the water cooled aftercooler system.
