5130B Excavator Lifting the Boom Caterpillar

Lifting the Boom
`

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death may occur from failure to adhere to the following warnings.

The boom can fall if a control is moved or if a hydraulic component fails.

Do not rely on a hydraulic cylinder to hold the boom.

Support the boom during all service procedures.

----------------------

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "AVSpare Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in AVSpare machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

When raising or lowering the boom with a dead engine air may become entrapped in the boom cylinder hydraulic circuit. Prior to putting the machine back into service it will be necessary to purge the air from the circuit. Failure to purge the air from the boom cylinder hydraulic circuit may result in failure of the boom cylinder piston seals.

If the machine is disabled, the boom can be lifted with another machine. This machine must have a minimum lifting capacity of 28700 kg (63272 lb).

  1. Purging screw (1) is located on the right side of the front control valve. Slowly loosen the purging screw. Opening purging screw (1) will allow oil to flow out of the rod end of the boom cylinder.

  1. Purging screw (2) is located on the right side of the front control valve. Slowly loosen the purging screw. Opening purging screw (2) will allow oil to flow into the head end of the boom cylinder.

  1. Lift the boom by using another machine.

  1. Tighten purging screw (5) .

  1. Purge air from the boom cylinders. For more information on purging air from hydraulic cylinders, refer to Special Instruction, " 5130B Excavator Assembly Procedure".

  1. Make all necessary repairs before you operate the machine.
