(21)Hydraulic System-Change filters

------ WARNING! ------

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

At operating temperature, hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.

Remove the hydraulic tank cap ONLY when it is cool enough to touch with your hand. Remove the cap slowly to relieve pressure.

------WARNING!--------

The machine must be level. The equipment must be lowered. The engine must be stopped.

1. Open the right side front access door. Remove the hydraulic tank cap slowly to relieve pressure.

2. Open the left front access door. Remove the cap from the hydraulic filter drain valve.

3. Turn valve (1) into the housing. Open the bleed screw (2) and allow the housing oil to drain.

Main Filters

4. Loosen the filter cover bolt. Remove the cover, screen and elements as a unit.

5. Remove the cotter pin which holds the elements and the screen to the cover.
6. Discard the used filter elements.
7. Wash the cover and screen in clean nonflammable solvent. Allow the parts to dry.
8. Assemble the clean screen and two new filter elements to the cover. Install the cotter pin.
9. Inspect the cover seal. Replace the seal if it is damaged.
10. Close the bleed screw. Close the drain valve and install the cap.

11. Install the cover carefully to avoid seal damage.

Tighten the bolt to 81 ± 5 N·m (60 ± 4 lb. ft.).

Pump Case Drain Filter

1. Remove the used element and seal from filter base.
2. Clean the filter base.

3. Lightly oil a new seal with clean hydraulic oil and install it in the filter base.

4. Install a new filter by hand. When the filter element contacts the seal, tighten 3/4 turn more.

Pilot System Filter

1. Open the right side rear access door.

2. Remove the drain plug at the base of the filter housing. Allow the oil to drain.

3. Loosen the bolt on top of the cover. Remove the cover assembly.

4. Remove the used filter element and clean the filter housing.

5. Inspect the cover seal. Use a new seal if the used one is damaged. Wash the cover in clean nonflammable solvent.
6. Clean and install the filter housing drain plug.
7. Install a new filter element in the housing.
8. Fill the housing with clean hydraulic oil.
9. Install the cover assembly and tighten the bolt to 60 ± 7 N·m (43 ± 5 lb. ft.).
10. Start the engine and operate it a few minutes. Inspect for leaks. Test control functions.
11. Position the linkage for hydraulic oil level inspection. Stop the engine.

Position the backhoe linkage with the stick cylinder fully extended and the bucket flat on the ground. The machine must be level.

Position the clamshell machine on level ground with the stick cylinder fully extended, and the bucket in the open position on the ground.

12. Observe the oil level. Maintain the level to the FULL mark on the sight glass. Close and secure the access doors.

(22)Fuel Tank-Wash the cap and strainer

1. Open the fuel cap access door. Remove the cap.
2. Replace the cap if the gasket is damaged.

3. Remove the strainer from the fill opening.
4. Wash the strainer in clean nonflammable solvent.
5. Install the strainer.
6. Install the tank cap.

(23)Seat Belt-Inspect-Replace if necessary

------ WARNING! ------

The seat belt must be replaced every 3 years, regardless of appearance.

------WARNING!--------

Inspect the belt. Replace it if it is damaged or frayed.

Be sure the anticreep slides and the buckle are not damaged and that they operate properly. Replace damaged parts.

Replace the belt mounting hardware if it is worn or damaged.

(24)Fuel System-Change fuel filters

Primary Element


NOTICE

Contamination of the fuel will cause accelerated wear of the fuel system parts. Do not fill fuel filters before installing them.


1. Lower all equipment and stop the engine. Open the right rear access door.

2. Loosen the bolt (1) on the filter base.

3. Lower the filter case (3) and remove the element (2).
4. Wash the case and element in clean nonflammable solvent. Shake the element and allow the parts to dry.

5. Clean the filter base. Replace the seal if it is damaged.
6. Install the filter element and case onto the base. Tighten the bolt.

Secondary Element

1. Remove the secondary filter and discard it.
2. Clean the filter base. Make sure all of the old filter seal is removed.

3. Coat the seal of a new filter with clean diesel fuel.

4. Install the new filter by hand. When the seal contacts the base, tighten 3/4 turn more. There are rotation marks 90° apart on the filter. Use these as a guide for proper tightening.
5. Start the engine and check for leaks. If the engine does not start, prime the fuel system.
6. Close the access door.

Priming the Fuel System

Filters and Pump Housing

1. Open the bleed valve on the pump housing.

2. Unscrew the hand priming pump plunger until it can be pulled out by hand.

3. Move the plunger in and out until fuel flows, free of air bubbles, from the bleed valve.
4. Close the bleed valve.
5. Push the plunger in and tighten by hand.
6. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Injection Pumps and Lines

The injection pumps and high pressure lines must be primed if the engine will not start, or runs rough, after priming the filters and pump housing.

Each injection pump has a reverse flow check valve. These cannot be opened with hand priming pump pressure. Use the following procedure to prime the injection pumps and lines.


NOTICE

The fuel injection nozzles can be permanently damaged by twisting if only one wrench is used to loosen or tighten the fuel line nuts. Use one wrench to hold the nozzle and another to loosen the nut.


1. Loosen each of the fuel line nuts at the cylinder head end.
2. Crank the engine with the starting motor until fuel flows, free of air bubbles, from each of the injection lines. Stop cranking the engine.
3. Tighten each of the fuel line nuts to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb. ft.). Use a second wrench on the nozzle to prevent damage to it.
4. Start the engine and check for leaks.
