214 AND 224 WHEEL-TYPE EXCAVATOR Controls Caterpillar

1.1. Indicators, Gauges and Switches

Indicators, Gauges and Switches

1. Alternator Fault Light - This light monitors the charging current. It should come on if the ignition key is inserted. It goes out if the alternator is charging. If it does not go out with the engine running, the batteries are not being charged. Determine the cause and repair the defect; if necessary, check the fan belts.

2. Engine Oil Pressure Fault Light - This light monitors the engine oil pressure. After starting the engine and building up sufficient oil pressure, the light goes out. If the the light comes on with the engine running, the lubrication system may have developed a fault. Stop the engine immediately.

3. Engine Temperature Fault Light - A red light shows that the engine is overheating. Stop engine immediately. When the light comes on, the horn sounds at the same time. Check fan belts.

4. Main Headlight Beam Indicator Light

5. Parking Brake Indicator Light - This lights when the parking brake is engaged. The light extinguishes when the brake is released.

6. Spare Light

7. Spare Alarm

8. Service Hour Meter - Indicates the total number of hours the engine has operated. Use it to determine service intervals.

9. Double Pressure Gauge for the Service Brake - The pressure in the air tanks should always be between 6.2 and 7.35 bar (606 and 720 kPa or 88 and 105 psi) and is displayed by the black pointer. The red pointer shows the feed pressure during braking. Never drive the machine with insufficient tank pressure, as low tank pressure also reduces the braking efficiency.

10. Fuel Gauge - The fuel gauge monitors the quantity of fuel in the fuel tank.

11. Hazard Flasher Light Switch

12. Working Lights Switch

13. Windshield Wiper Switch

14. Power Socket - This socket may be used for hand lamps, cigarette lighters or similar devices. Check voltage.

15. Key Start Switch - Four positions to the right after key insertion.

1 - Off

2 - No Function

3 - Heat-Start (Control light will light when ready to start engine.)

4 - Engine Start - Release the key after the engine starts (224 only).

Use the push button starter on 214.

Release the starter after the engine starts.

16. Electric Disconnect Key - Three positions to the right after key insertion.

1 - Ignition On - Ready to use starter.

2 - Parking Lights

3 - Head Lights

NOTE: Directional control must be in NEUTRAL to start engine.

17. Governor Control Lever - Pull back to increase the engine speed. Push lever forward past detent to stop the engine.

18. Service Brake Pedal - Push down to slow or stop the machine.

19. Parking Brake Shift Lock Lever - Engage to prevent from engaging and damaging transmission.

20. Flasher Switch with Integrated Fault Light Direction Signal Lever - Push forward to flash left turn signals. Pull back to flash right turn signals. Tip of lever flashes when either signal light flashes.

Stop the machine completely before changing the speed selector range.

Transmission and hydraulic drive motor will be damaged if this operating instruction is not observed.

In order to use the speed selector, lift the shift lock with the left hand. This shift lock should prevent simultaneous shifting of the transmission and the drive lever.

In case the machine must be towed in an emergency, shift the drive transmission in the undercarriage to neutral (detent position on shift cylinder). For high gear position the cylinder is completely out, for low gear, completely in.

With the engine running, bring the speed selector into center position (if necessary, lift the shift lock).

With the engine stopped the shift cylinder on the transmission can be moved by hand into the center position.

To do so loosen four hex head bolts, remove the cover, and insert a bolt into the shifting lock.

The hydraulic drive motor will be damaged if the drive transmission is not shifted to neutral before towing the machine.

1. Speed Selector Lever

Forward - low gear

Center - neutral and towing position

Rearward - high gear

2. Directional Control Lever - Move forward to travel forward. Move back for reverse travel. The lever has detent positions.

3. Stabilizer Control or Bulldozer Blade Control Lever - Move forward to lower stabilizers or bulldozer blade. Move back to raise stabilizers or bulldozer blade.

4. Brake Pedal - The swing brake pedal is used to slow down the rotating upper carriage. Do not brake and use the swing control, at the same time.

5. Swing Brake Shutoff Valve - The shutoff valve can be used to lock the upper carriage and the undercarriage together.

6. Parking/Service Brake and Axle Stability Switch - This switch is used for locking the brakes and steering axle during machine service. Engaging the switch locks all four wheels.

Axle Stabilizer 7.

Down - The steering axle (front) is locked (rigid).

Up - The steering axle is free to oscilate (traveling).

Boom Cylinder Shutoff Valve 8. - While excavating, the shutoff valve is forward (open). While traveling or while waiting with loaded boom, the shutoff valve may be closed (move backward). This prevents the lift cylinder from lowering (due to valve leakage).

Stick Cylinder and Swing Control Lever 9.

Forward - Stick out

Rearward - Stick in

Left - Swing to left

Right - Swing to right

Control Lever for Boom Cylinders and Bucket Cylinder 10.

Forward - Lower boom

Rearward - Raise boom

Right - Empty bucket

Left - Fill bucket

Parking Brake Lever 11. - Push forward to release. Pull back to engage.

Optional Hydraulic Attachment 1. - With push button depressed, the swing lever, will not swing the machine to the right or the left. The lever then operates a hydraulic attachment (if equipped), clockwise or counterclockwise rotation of attachment.

Independent Heater Switch 2.

Turn left - vent on

Turn right - heater on (indicator light on)

Neutral position - heater and ventilator off.

Control Light for Glow Plug Type Heating System 3. - If the engine is ready to start after using the heat-start heating system, the indicator light will go on.

Hydraulic and Undercarriage Lock Lever 4. - This lever is located at the left lower side of the operator's seat. With the lever in the vertical position the undercarriage is locked, and all hydraulic functions are blocked. The operator can enter or leave the cab. With the lever in the horizontal position all hydraulic functions are operable.

Windshield Wiper - The switch for the windshield wiper is located in the front upper lining of the cab.

Windshield Washer - The switch for the windshield washer is next to the switch for the windshield wiper. When the washer is activated, the wiper comes on automatically.

Warning Buzzer for Low Air Pressure - If the air pressure in the tank drops by 30%, a warning buzzer will sound.

Air Cleaner Indicator (1, Fig. 776) - Progressive choking of the air cleaner filter element enlarges the red area in the inspection glass of the indicator and warns that replacement of the filter element is necessary. This visual check is possible even with the engine stopped. If the indicator locks in the red position, replace the filter element. Push the release button and the red area will disappear.

Defroster (1, Fig. 513) - Direct the air flow as required by turning the nozzle.

Fuse Box (2, Fig. 776) - The fuse box is mounted behind the plastic trim panel and is easily accessible after opening the snap fasteners.

Locking the Upper Carriage (3, Fig. 776) - Locking bolt for the upper carriage when transporting and traveling long distances.

Cab Door - Locking latch for the cab door in open position (Fig. 515). Press the door against the cab wall for locking. Release by pulling the latch forward.

------ WARNING! ------

When lowering the boom with the engine stopped, keep all personnel away from the boom area.

Emergency Release of the Boom Cylinders (6, Fig. 574) - If a defect arises in the hydraulic pilot system or a failure of the control oil pump or the diesel engine occurs, the attachment can be lowered to the ground by turning the shutoff valve through 90°.

Make sure that nobody is under the boom before operating the emergency release.

A baffle installed in the pipe system reduces the lowering speed. Close the shutoff valve again after placing the attachment on the ground (machine service).

Cab Light - Use switch in the lamp to turn lamp on or off (Fig. 516).

ON - Push cover to left.

OFF - Push cover to right.
