Introduction

This Special Instruction describes the necessary procedures for you to replace the counter balance spool on certain hydraulic excavators. If you need more information to install the spool, consult your Cat dealer.

Safety

Move the machine to flat and level ground.

------ WARNING! ------

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic systems after the engine and pump have been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic systems. To prevent possible injury, refer to the section, Testing and Adjusting, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" before any fitting, hose or component is loosened, tightened, removed or adjusted.

When possible, the work tool must always be lowered to the ground before service is started. When it is necessary for the boom to be in the raised position while tests or adjustments are done, be sure that the boom, stick and work tool have correct support.

The swing lock (if equipped) must be engaged before service is started.

Always move the machine to a location away from the travel of other machines. Be sure that other personnel are not near the machine when the engine is running and tests or adjustments are being made.



NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contamination of the hydraulic system with foreign material will reduce the service life of the hydraulic system components.

To prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system, always plug or cap the lines, fittings, or hoses as they are disconnected. Cover any disassembled components and clean them properly before assembly.

Clean the hydraulic system properly after any major component exchange or especially after a component failure, to remove any contamination.


Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, thoroughly clean the exterior of the component. Cleaning the component will prevent contamination from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: Put identification marks on all the components as the components are being removed. All the parts must be reinstalled in the original location.

(1) Upper cover
(2) Spring

  1. Remove the upper 307-4209 Cover (1).

    1. Remove the 307-4208 Spring (2).

    2. Remove the 095-1594 O-Ring Seal (3).

    3. Remove the 307-4207 Pusher (4).

  2. Remove the lower 307-4209 Cover (7).

    1. Remove the 307-4208 Spring (2).

    2. Remove the 095-1594 O-Ring Seal (3).

    3. Remove the 307-4207 Pusher (4).

  3. Remove the counter balance spool.

    Note: Do not remove the spool with a magnet. The magnet may magnetize the body around the port and other parts. Metal contamination can stay around the spool because of magnetized parts.

  4. Check the counter balance spool for markings. Refer to Illustration 2. Use Table 1 for correct spool replacement.

  5. Select the appropriate counter balance spool from the list in Table 1. Confirm that the movement of the spool is smooth.

    Note: If you have more than one choice, choose the spool that moves most freely in the bore.

  6. Reassemble

  7. Operate the motor in low speed, low pressure, clockwise and counter-clockwise for approximately 10 minutes. Confirm that oil is not leaking.
