PROBLEM

Hydraulic fluid may leak from the joint between the head assembly and the cylinder assembly for the stick cylinder on certain 330D Excavators. The leaks may be caused by a failed 259-3174 Backup Ring, or by the bore in the cylinder barrel being oversize.

Remove all 259-3174 Backup Rings from dealer parts stock.

Replace the 259-3174 yellow continuous backup ring in the stick cylinder with a 198-2640 split backup ring. Install a new 095-1726 o-ring seal and a new 8T-8379 seal-head.

MODELS INVOLVED - 330D L Excavators

Dear AVSpare Product Owner:

New backup ring and seals need to be installed between the stick cylinder head and the stick cylinder barrel on the products listed below. If the backup ring and seals are not replaced, hydraulic fluid may leak from the joint between the cylinder head and the cylinder assembly of the stick cylinder. The leak results when the 259-3174 Backup Ring fails. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local AVSpare dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 29Aug2006 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure

Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual that is appropriate for your machine.

1. Remove the 234-4601 Stick Cylinder Group from the machine.

2. Disassemble the stick cylinder group. Disassemble the head and the rod assembly from the cylinder assembly.

3. Measure the inside diameter of the cylinder barrel at the joint for the head seal. The specification for the inside diameter is 170.0 ? 0.1 mm (6.693 ? 0.004 inch).

4. If the inside diameter of the cylinder barrel is oversize, the 242-6806 Cylinder Assembly must be replaced.

5. Install a new 198-2640 Backup Ring Backup Ring in place of the former 259-3174 Backup Ring. Install a new 095-1726 O-Ring Seal and a new 8T-8379 Seal-Head. Use 1U6396 O-Ring Compound.

Reassemble the 234-4601 Stick Cylinder Group. Perform a bench test and make sure that the stick cylinder group does not leak. Reinstall the stick cylinder group on the machine.
