PROBLEM
The 222-8374 and 266-6305 Pump Couplings need to be replaced on certain 385C, 385C FS, 385CL, and 385CL MH Excavators. The pump coupling can fail at spring tip causing engine rear gear train failure. The pump coupling needs to be replaced with the 196-8133 Pump Coupling. |

Remove all pump coupling 266-6305 from dealer parts stock. |
Follow your Disassembly and Assembly Manual to remove and replace the existing pump coupling with a new one. Correct installation of the pump coupling is with bolt head toward the flywheel side to leave more gap. |

Refer to the 385B Service Manual (RENR5407) "Remove and Install Main Hydraulic Pumps" in order to access the coupling group. Remove the flywheel and check the rear gear train. If the gears are damaged, replace all damaged parts, before installing the new coupling. Reinstall the flywheel according to the disassembly and assembly procedure. |
1. Clean and dry all parts of the new coupling. |
2. Apply sealant on the 8T-4835 Mounting Bolt for the coupling. Recommended sealant for mounting bolt is Loctite Product 270 or 271. |

3. Install the 196-8133 Coupling Group to the flywheel. Bolt tightening torque is 135 +/- 20Nm. Please take care the direction of coupling installation, and make sure to assemble the coupling so that the bolt head of coupling faces to flywheel side. |
4. Reuse the 233-1155 Tube Assembly and pump mounting bolts. Do not reuse the existing main hydraulic pump housing seals, install one each of a 6V-5043, 3P-0658, 6V-5049 O-Ring Seals. |
5. Install the hydraulic pump, and tighten the pump flange mounting bolt to 70 +/- 15Nm. |
6. Fill hydraulic tank and engine with oil. |
7. Before starting the engine to avoid cavitation that could cause serious damage to the pumps, refer to RENR5405, Test & Adjust "Main Hydraulic Pump Air - Purge" procedure to eliminate any air that may be trapped. |
8. Start the engine and check oil level of hydraulic tank and engine again. Check any leakage and abnormal noise. |
Addendum: At Engine overhaul, replace Pump Coupling Springs as a normal overhaul procedure. |
