The existing muffler may have crack at inlet portion of muffler because of not enough weld of inlet tube on muffler body, misalignment of exhaust line, and not enough clamping processed on certain 320D, 320DRR, and 323D Excavators. If a crack is identified, replace with the updated muffler.

Rework Procedure

1. Remove the 4 nuts from the u-band that connect the muffler with the muffler bracket. Remove the u-band from the muffler.

2. Remove the 3 nuts that connect the exhaust pipe to the turbo-charger. Remove the exhaust pipe from the turbo-charger.

3. Loosen the 2 bolts for the clamp and separate the exhaust pipe from the muffler.

4. Set up and reassemble the muffler bracket to the correct position. Refer to the image below. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 35 +/- 6 Nm.

5. Connect the exhaust pipe to the new muffler by temporarily tightening the pipe-clamp with the 2 bolts.

6. Install the new muffler assembly onto the muffler bracket. Attach the exhaust pipe to the turbo-charger. Tighten the 3 nuts to a torque of 21 +/- 3 Nm. Adjust the position of the exhaust pipe in order to keep the center line between the exhaust pipe and muffler-intake in line.

7. Adjust the 4 nuts on the u-band so that the nuts are 35mm from the edge of the u-band.

8. Adjust the nuts so that the nuts are parallel with each other.

9. Set up the u-band from the upper side of the muffler. Tighten the 4 nuts on the lower side of the u-band to a torque of 12 Nm. Keep the distance of the muffler bracket and tip of u-band to 23 +/- 2 mm.
