The boom foot may crack at the weld of the boss to the boom side plates on certain 416E, 420E, and 430E Backhoe Loaders. Refer to Image 1 in the Action Required.

Rework Procedure


 
Inspect the boom foot for cracking at the location in image 1.

If the boom foot is cracked, grind out crack, reweld and continue with the adding the additional plates.
 
The following images are plate locations and weld specs for the 416E, 420E and 430E

1) Remove the boom from the machine.

2) Remove the paint from the boom foot area, enough to allow the plate to be welded.

3) Mark two locations on the outer portion of the boom ears opposite each other to use as reference marks. Use a micrometer to measure the distance between the ears (using the reference marks) and record the measurement.

4) With a 1" threaded rod, fitted with end plates, stabilize the boom ears (see image 1.3.1). Pull the ears in 2mm.

5) Locate the plates according to the plate locating print for your specific model (see images 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3) and tach weld the plate in place.

6) Add a filler weld (1) between plate and the existing boom side plates. Refer to Images 1.5.1 and 1.5.2.

7) Add a filler weld (2) between the plate and the boom boss. Refer to Images 1.6.1 and 1.6.2.

8) Add a weld (3) to the side of the plate. Starting at the boom side plate and running the weld into the existing boss weld. (Image 1.7.1)

9) Add a weld (4) to the other side of the plate. Starting at the boom side plate and running weld into the existing boss weld. (Image 1.8.1)

10) Add another filler weld (5) between the plate and the boom boss. (Image 1.9.1 and Image 1.9.2)

11) Add finish weld (6) between the plate and the boom side plate. (Image 1.10.1 and Image 1.10.2)

12) Add another weld (7) between the plate and the boom boss. (Image 1.11.1 and Image 1.11.2)

13) Add finish weld (8) between the plate and the boom boss. (Image 1.11.1 and Image 1.11.2)

14) Repeat the weld process on the other side.

15) Release the boom ears and measure the distance between the reference marks (see step 3). Adjust as needed to obtain the previously measured distance.

16) Using the boom foot pin, check for bore alignment.
