PROBLEM

The existing bolted joint can slip and lose chain tension on certain T6B, T9B, and T15B Trenchers. If the existing bolted joint fails it will cause the tensioning cylinder to take the load and fail. Replacing the bolted joint with 9/16" hardware is recommended for a permanent fix to the chain tensioning group.

Rework Procedure

Remove one M12 bolt and hardware from idler.

Chase out 12mm hole to 9/16 (14.2mm) using a drill. Reference Image 1.1.1.

Temporarily install 9/16 hardware.

Remove the second M12 bolt and hardware from idler.

Chase out the second 12mm hole to 9/16 (14.2mm) using a drill.

Temporarily install 9/16 hardware.

Continue with remaining two bolts.

Remove grease fitting from grease ram.

Remove pin from master link in chain and pull chain apart.

Remove chain from around idler pulley. Removal of chain from tool is not necessary as long as idler end of trencher boom is accessible.

Remove all 9/16 hardware from idler ensuring all parts are marked for proper orientation and re-assembly.

Remove idler assembly from trencher boom ensuring all parts are marked for proper orientation and re-assembly.

Inspect idler assembly and grind 4 bolt tubes flush with surfaces on each side if necessary. Paint ground surfaces.

Remove grease ram and compress, reinstall grease fitting.

Mark slots with a scribe a line 1 mm above slot and 1mm below the slot for all four slots. (Grind to the line using a hand grinder)

Inspect slots for fit by using the 9/16 bolts through both slots. Slot is correct when the bolts will travel the distance of the slot unimpeded. Paint ground slot surfaces.

Reassemble idler cylinder

Clean all contact surfaces: boom internal and external, side plates, and idler tube.

Reassemble idler into boom w/ shims. A quantity of 0-4 shims may be necessary. Secure shims properly and drill holes in shims to 9/16 prior to installation. Shims are to be inserted inside the trencher boom, between the internal wall of the boom and the outside surface of the idler assembly. Reference Image 1.2.1. Use as many shims as can easily be inserted. Distribute shims evenly to each side, or as evenly as possible. Maintain loose fit for adjustability.

Replace side plates, bolts, washers, and nuts. Carefully guide bolts through shims. Do not tighten.

Reassemble chain.

Check chain tension. Proper tension from bottom surface of boom tube to top of chain is 2-1/2" for T15B and T9B with a tolerance of +3/4" / -1/4" (2-1/4" to 3-1/4"). Proper tension from bottom surface of boom tube to top of chain is 1-1/2" for T6B with a tolerance of +3/4" / -1/4" (1-1/4" to 2-1/4"). If necessary, use a grease gun to tension chain using grease cylinder inside trencher boom. See Operation and Maintenance Manual for details.

Slide side plates as far as possible toward the front of the boom while tightening bolts to take up the bolt hole clearance within the idler assembly tubes.

Tighten bolts to a torque of 190 Nm each in a pattern. Repeated tightening 4 to 5 times around the pattern may be necessary. See and Maintenance Manual for details.

Rotate chain at least 3 times by using SSL/MTL machine to operate the trencher. Confirm proper chain tension before putting trencher into use.
