1 SEHS7332 Do Not Operate Tag
In order to allow equitable parts availability to all participating dealers, please limit your initial parts order to not exceed 40% of dealership population. This is an initial order recommendation only, and the ultimate responsibility for ordering the total number of parts needed to satisfy the program lies with the dealer.

ACTION REQUIRED

Attach a "Do Not Operate" Warning Tag, SEHS7332, to the control lever on the counterweight removal system located in the right side hydraulic pump compartment of the machine. This tag is to instruct and remind machine operators and maintenance personnel not to operate the counterweight removal system.

The SEHS7332 "Do Not Operate" Warning Tag can be ordered through AVSpare Media Logistics by calling 1-800-566-7782.

This is an interim corrective action until a permanent corrective action is implemented. AVSpare is currently working on a solution to this issue. Until the permanent repair procedure is developed, use appropriate lifting equipment to manually remove or install the counterweight. Follow the procedures in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for "Counterweight Removal and Installation for Standard Machines" (Refer to the appropriate rework procedure which references the O&MM media number). When the counterweight has been lowered to the ground and stabilized, the counterweight removal chain can be safely disconnected from the counterweight.

An allowance for crane charges to remove and install the counterweight can be claimed for each time the machine is moved.

On the 345B machines, the counterweight removal system could be ordered separately as a non-installed attachment. If any dealer has installed the 127-7524 counterweight removal attachment on a 345B machine, please access the Dealer Solutions Network and submit a request to notify the Excavator Product Support Group. Please include the machine serial number and reference this service letter in the request. From this notification, the Product Support Group will add this machine serial number to this Service Letter.

SAFETY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM TO CEASE OPERATION OF THE COUNTERWEIGHT REMOVAL SYSTEM ON CERTAIN 345B, 345B II, AND 345C EXCAVATORS

MODELS INVOLVED - 345B, 345B II, 345B II LC-FIX, 345B L II, 345C, AND 345C L EXCAVATORS

Dear AVSpare Product Owner:

Cease operation of the counterweight removal system immediately. The existing counterweight removal chain may fail. This chain failure could cause the counterweight to drop unexpectedly when being lowered or raised by means of the counterweight removal system. This unexpected drop may result in personal injury or death. Please contact your local AVSpare dealer who will tag the Control lever on the counterweight removal system with a "Do Not Operate" Warning Tag. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local AVSpare dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 25Jun2008 when scheduling this service.

We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed for your added safety and satisfaction.

Rework Procedure

Group Number 1

Attach The Warning Tag

1. Move the hydraulic lockout control lever in the cab to the LOCKED position. Open the pump compartment door on the right side of machine to access the counterweight removal control valve.
Image1.1.1

2. Check the position of the counterweight removal control lever. Control lever (3) must be placed in the CLOSED position. At the same time, verify the switch (2) is in the OFF position, and the stop valves are (1) also in the CLOSED position.
Image1.2.1

3. Attach the SEHS7332 "Do Not Operate" Warning Tag to the control lever (3) of counterweight removal control valve.

Counterweight Removal Procedure (if required):

Prior to starting any work on the machine, please review, understand, and adhere to all safety and environmental warnings in the appropriate Operation and Maintenance Manual.

When counterweight removal is required, use the following O&MM procedure to remove the counterweight WITHOUT using the Counterweight removal system.

For the 345B refer to SEBU7029, Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Counterweight Removal and Installation for Standard Machines" for specific weight information.

For the 345B II refer to SEBU7289, Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Counterweight Removal and Installation for Standard Machines" for specific weight information.

Position the machine on a surface that is hard and level. Lower the work tool to the ground. Move the hydraulic lockout control lever in the cab to the LOCKED position.
1. Remove the five bolts (1) and washers (2) from cover (3).
2. Remove the six bolts (1) and washers (2) from cover (4).
3. Remove covers (3) and (4).
Image1.4.1

4. Fasten a properly rated cable, or other lifting device, to the counterweight lifting points. Position capable lifting equipment and raise the counterweight enough to put tension on the cable and remove the load on the counterweight mounting bolts. If the tension in the cable is too much or too little, removing the mounting bolts will be difficult.
Image1.5.1

5. Remove six mounting bolts and washers from the back of the counterweight.
Image1.6.1

6. Remove two bolts, two washers and a plate, located on the bottom of the counterweight left of center.
7. Carefully raise the counterweight enough to clear the retaining bolts, keeping the roller chains clear of interference with the cylinder, sprockets, or other catch points (retaining bolts can remain locked), as shown in Image 1.7.1.
8. Carefully move the counterweight away from the upper frame enough to clear the retaining bolts. Again, keeping the roller chains clear, lower counterweight to the ground keeping it supported (Image 1.7.2).
9. Remove cotter pin (6). Loosen nut (7). Remove pin (8) and disconnect chain bracket (9) from counterweight (5) (Image 1.7.3). With the counterweight separated from the machine, it can be moved and placed in a safe and supported position (Image 1.7.4).

Image1.7.2
Image1.7.3
Image1.7.4

10. Store the chains and chain bracket as follows: Pin (11) should be located in one of the machine's storage boxes. Remove pin (11) from the storage box.
11. Install pin (11) into chain bracket (10).
12. Install bolts (13) and washers (14) in order to attach pin (11) to plate (12).
Image1.8.1

Counterweight Installation

For counterweight installation, perform the removal procedure in reverse order.

NOTE: After aligning counterweight mounting holes with threaded upper frame holes, assemble the six counterweight mounting bolts with washers until tight. Reduce the tension on the lifting cable, making sure that the counterweight is correctly positioned on the retaining pins. Tighten the six counterweight mounting bolts to a torque of 2700 +/- 300 Nm (1990 +/- 220 lb ft).
