This Revised Service Letter replaces the 26Jan2009 Service Letter. Changes have been made to Rework Procedure regarding action to be taken due to inspection results. |
The eccentric weight shaft and the bearings need to be inspected on certain CVP110 Vibratory Compactors. Due to some lower compactor housing assemblies being manufactured too narrow, a high preload may be placed on the eccentric shaft bearings causing them to overheat and seize during the initial start-up and operation. |

Dear AVSpare Product Owner:
The eccentric shaft bearings need to be inspected on the products listed below. The existing bearings can seize causing the compactor to stop functioning. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local AVSpare dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 26Jan2009 when scheduling this service.

Note: Do not order the 205-9502 CVP110 Compactor until the inspection has been performed and it is determined that a replacement CVP110 Compactor is required. For ordering information, refer to the section titled "INSPECTION RESULTS".
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Note: See the section titled "Inspection Results" following the "Inspection Procedure" for information on what to do with units that pass or fail the inspection.
1. Allow the compactor to cool and then remove the motor (1). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, RENR4444, "Gear Motor - Remove".
2. Once the motor is removed, place a mark on the eccentric shaft (2) for reference and note its original position relative to the compactor housing.
3. Rotate the eccentric shaft (2) 90 degrees from the original position and then release the eccentric shaft.
INSPECTION PASS: Due to the internal eccentric weight on the shaft, the shaft should rotate freely and oscillate until coming to rest with the mark on the shaft within a few degrees of the original position reference in step #2 above.
INSPECTION FAIL: When the eccentric shaft is released the shaft does not rotate or the rotation is highly dampened resulting in the mark on the shaft not returning to the original position referenced in step #2 above there is excessive preload on the bearings. Another verification of the failure to pass inspection would be that there is no measurable eccentric shaft end play.
NOTE: See the section titled "Inspection Results" following the "Inspection Procedure" for information on what to do with units that pass or fail the inspection. |

4. Reinstall the motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual, RENR4444, "Gear Motor - Install". Reinstall motor even if the unit failed the inspection.
INSPECTION RESULTS
PASS - If the unit passed inspection, return the unit to service. No other rework action is required.
FAIL - 1. All Dealers: Remove any mounting bracket or jumper lines that were attached to the compactor, leaving just the top level 205-5902 Vibratory Plate Compactor Group. Labor will be covered under the Service Letter Service Claim Allowance annotation. Cap all lines removed to prevent contamination and store the lines and compactor mounting bracket.
2. All Dealers: Order a replacement 205-5902 CVP110 compactor through CMOPS. The entire compactor is being replaced and is a nomenclatured product; it is not a serviceable part in the ANTARES parts ordering system.
NOTE: Make sure that when filing the warranty claim for this Service Letter that the cost of the replacement compactor is claimed and not the cost of the affected unit as there may be a price difference due to price increases that have occurred since the time that the affected unit was purchased.
3. NACD Dealers: Call 1-785-456-6838 or e-mail propsrj@cat.com with the following information to obtain a Return Goods Authorization (RGA) number: This information will allow the Send It Back (SIB) parts return request to be created so the affected unit can be shipped back to AVSpare.
a. Name b. Phone # c. Dealer Code for location of the compactor d. Compactor S/N e. One of the following: Service Claim Number, Dealer Claim Number, or Dealer Work Order Number
LACD Dealers: E-mail propsrj@cat.com with the following information:
a. Name b. Phone # c. Compactor S/N
An address will be provided to return only the CVP110 serial number plates. The rest of the CVP110 compactor is to be scrapped.
4. NACD Dealers: Write the RGA number that is given to you in a visible location(s) on the affected compactor iron (not just the shipping container or paperwork) with a paint pen or other permanent marker. From this point on, follow your normal warranty procedure for storage and pickup through SIB of failed iron.
LACD Dealers: Go to the next step.
5. When the replacement compactor arrives, install any mounting bracket and/or jumper lines that were removed in step #1 above and then place the unit into service. |
