5230B Excavator Machine Electronic Control System Harness Code and Attachment Code Caterpillar

Harness Code and Attachment Code
`

The harness code and the attachment code are used in order to customize the machine. There are five harness code inputs to the machine ECM. The harness code tells the ECM the sales model. The attachment code is entered into the Vital Information Management System (VIMS).

The contacts for the harness code are shown in Table 1.

Table 1
Status     Contact
Pin 1 Pin 2     Pin 3     Pin 4     Pin 5
Closed to Ground     Yes     Yes     No     No     Yes

If the harness code is invalid at powerup, a CID 0650 FMI 02 will be logged and the application will look for a valid harness code that was previously stored in the ECM. If no valid code was found in the ECM, the application will not run. If there is a valid harness code that is stored in the machine ECM, the application will run by using the previously stored harness code.

After the machine ECM has determined that the harness code is correct, the ECM will then check the attachment code. The ECM checks the harness code in order to determine the options that are available on the machine.

The service person may view the attachment code by entering the service program code MSTAT (67828) on the VIMS keypad.

Note: Refer to theSystems Operation, RENR3376, "Machine Status - Show" for additional information.

The service person may change the attachment code by entering the service program code ATTACH (288224) on the VIMS keypad.

After ATTACH is entered from the keypad, the operator presses the "OK" key. The message center will show:

The desired attachment code can then be entered from the keypad by entering the desired attachment code. Then press the "OK" key. If a valid attachment code has been entered, the message center will prompt the operator to re-enter the attachment code. The message center will show:

Illustration 3g00485848

If the same code is entered again, this code will be accepted as the new attachment code. If the same code is not entered at the second prompt, the new attachment code will not be accepted. The old attachment code remains valid. A new attachment code will not be accepted, if an invalid code is entered at either prompt. The old attachment code remains valid. If the "OK" key was pressed at either prompt prior to entering a number, the old attachment code remains valid.

The attachment codes are shown in Table 2.

Table 2
Attachment Code     Meaning
33     5230B FS with the Service Console
53     5230B FS without the Service Console
76     5230B ME with the Service Console
45     5230B FS without the Service Console

The VIMS ECM will log a data event whenever the attachment code is changed. A data event will also be logged in order to record the new attachment code.

If the attachment code is not received for 45 seconds during the normal operation of the machine, a diagnostic code of CID 0650 FMI 09 will become active. The diagnostic code will change to CID 0650 FMI 02 if the attachment code that is sent by the VIMS ECM is invalid three times.
