The speed reducer (2) is one component of the system that is used to drive the W345B Series II Wheeled Material Handler. Other components include travel motor (1), output shaft (3), coupling (4), axle (5), sprocket (6), and chain (7) .

The speed reducer reduces the rotating speed of the travel motors. The rotation is transferred to the wheel drive through output shaft (11) .

The speed reducer consists of two stages of planetary gears. The first stage is made up of planetary gear (18), sun gear (19), planetary carrier (7), and ring gear (6). The second stage is made up of planetary gear (14), sun gear (15), planetary carrier (9), and ring gear (8) .

The planetary gears reduce the speed of the travel motors. The planetary gears also increase the torque of the travel motors.

Planetary Gear Operation

Rotation of travel motor output shafts (2) and (21) is transferred to sun gear (19). Sun gear (19) is splined to gear (20). Sun gear (19) rotates clockwise. The speed reducer operates in the following manner.

Planetary gear (18) engages with sun gear (19). Planetary gear (18) rotates counterclockwise as sun gear (19) rotates clockwise. Planetary gear (18) also engages with ring gear (6). Planetary gear (18) advances around the teeth of ring gear (6). As planetary gear (18) rotates, the planetary gear moves clockwise around sun gear (19). Planetary gear (18) is mounted to planetary carrier (7) by planetary shaft (16) and roller bearings (17). The assembly of planetary carrier (7) rotates clockwise.

The rotation of planetary carrier (7) is transferred to sun gear (15) of the second stage reduction group. The second stage reduction group is splined to planetary carrier (7). Sun gear (15) rotates clockwise. Clockwise rotation of sun gear (15) rotates planetary gear (14) counterclockwise. Planetary gear (14) engages with sun gear (15) .

Planetary gear (14) engages with ring gear (8). Planetary gear (14) advances around the teeth of ring gear (8). As planetary gear (14) rotates, the planetary gear circles clockwise around sun gear (15). Planetary gear (14) is mounted to planetary carrier (9) by planetary shaft (12) and by roller bearings (13). The assembly of planetary carrier (9) rotates clockwise.

Planetary carrier (9) is splined to output shaft (11) for the wheel drive. Output shaft (11) rotates around roller bearings (10). The torque from planetary carrier (9) is transferred to the wheel drive. The wheel drive transfers the torque to the wheel. The wheel rotates in the forward direction.
