The travel motor receives hydraulic oil from the swivel, and the motor uses the fluid to transfer torque through a drive shaft to the drive wheel axle through the speed reducer.

The travel motor that is used in the W345B Series II Wheeled Material Handler is a radial piston type motor. The motor works in conjunction with the Automatic Speed Control, and the motor is capable of two speeds. Selecting the TORTOISE setting on the travel speed control switches the motor and travel speed to LOW SPEED. Selecting the RABBIT setting on the travel speed control switches the motor and travel speed to HIGH SPEED.

The flow of the pump oil depends on the direction of travel. Pump oil flows into the travel motor through port (2) or port (12). Pump oil is forced out of the travel motor through port (12) or port (2). The case drain oil that has leaked returns to the tank through drain port (14) .

For forward movement in the left front motor, pump oil enters port (12) and exits through port (2). For reverse movement, pump oil enters port (2) and exits through port (12). In the right rear motor, the pump flow operates in the opposite manner.

Inside the travel motor, pistons (8) move in cylinders (6) within housing (7). An eccentric cam is connected to drive shaft (10). The eccentric cam is in contact with the pistons. Pilot oil enters the travel motor through port (13), and the pilot oil moves piston (3). This movement changes the position of the eccentric cam. Selecting the RABBIT setting causes the piston to move to the right against the force of spring (4). This adjusts the eccentric cam to the minimum displacement position for HIGH SPEED operation. Selecting the TORTOISE setting relieves pilot pressure from spring (4). This causes the piston to adjust the cam to the maximum displacement position for LOW SPEED operation.

Pump oil enters the motor through oil distributor (1). The oil distributor routes the oil to nine pistons (8) that are held within cylinders (6). Return oil is also routed through the oil distributor. Oil is distributed to the piston with the longest stroke position. The oil pushes the pistons (8) and the oil rotates the oil distributor to the next cylinder that has the longest stroke.
