Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.

Removing air from the fuel system

(1) Vent plug

(2) Vent plug

(3) Priming pump plunger

Use the following procedures to prime the fuel system.

Note: This will also purge air from the fuel system.

Perform the following steps in order to prime the fuel filter.

  1. Open the vent plug (1) on the fuel filter base by 1 1/2 turns.

  1. Unlock the hand priming pump by turning plunger (3) to the left. Operate the hand priming pump in order to pump fuel into the fuel system.


    NOTICE

    Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.


  1. Close the vent plug (1) when the fuel flows free of bubbles.

  1. Stop operating the hand priming pump when a strong pressure is felt on the pump. Lock the hand priming pump by turning plunger (3) to the right.

Perform the following steps in order to prime the fuel injection pump.

  1. Open the vent plug (2) on the fuel injection pump by 1 1/2 turns.

  1. Unlock the hand priming pump by turning plunger (3) to the left. Operate the hand priming pump in order to pump fuel into the fuel system.


    NOTICE

    Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.


  1. Close the vent plug (2) when the fuel flows free of bubbles.

  1. Stop operating the hand priming pump when a strong pressure is felt on the pump. Lock the hand priming pump by turning plunger (3) to the right.


NOTICE

Do not crank the engine continuously for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.


Crank the engine as soon as possible after pressurizing the system. The engine should start within 15 seconds.

If the engine does not start after 30 seconds, stop cranking the engine and repeat the proper priming procedure.
