(A) Exhaust valve

(B) Inlet valve

  1. Remove the valve mechanism cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.

  1. Remove the glow plugs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Glow Plugs - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.

  1. Select an accessible exhaust rocker arm. The exhaust rocker arm can be on any cylinder.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to rotate the crankshaft until the push rod end of the selected exhaust rocker arm (1) reaches the lowest position. This position indicates that the hydraulic lifter is sitting on the base circle of the camshaft lobe.

    Typical example

One electronic unit injector is not shown for clarity.

  1. Mount Tooling (B) with the pointer that is touching the top face of the exhaust rocker arm (1) above the push rod.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to rotate the crankshaft until the hydraulic lifter starts to open the exhaust valve. Continue to rotate the crankshaft until the finger of the indicator moves by 2.8 mm (0.11 inch).

Note: This measurement indicates the safe position of 60 degrees. The precise position will vary depending whether the hydraulic lifter is leaked down or not. The reading on the dial indicator may reduce as the hydraulic lifter continues to leak down. As soon as a value of 2.8 mm (0.11 inch) is reached the crankshaft is in a safe position.

Note: Make temporary marks on the vibration damper and the front housing once the engine is in the safe position.

NOTICE

Ensure that the crankshaft is located in the safe position before the rocker shaft assembly is installed.
