A Detailed Torque Sequence for the Plug, Seat, and Nut for the Manual Stick Lowering Control Valve is Used on Certain E Series and F Series Excavators {5117, 5453}

A detailed torque sequence is used to tighten the plug, seat, and nut of the manual stick lowering control valve on certain excavators listed above. An improper tightening torque sequence can damage the seat, resulting in an internal leak, which causes the stick cylinder to drift.

Failure to follow the proper torque sequence may lead to premature failure of the 285-1768 Load Control Valve Gp and 352-7196 Check and Relief Valve Gp. Refer to the procedure that follows for the proper torque sequence.

Torque Sequence Procedure

Manual stick lowering control valve
(1) 2D-6642 Ball
(2) 3H-0442 O-Ring Seal
(3) 5C-2874 Nut
(4) 165-9513 Seat
(5) 165-9514 Plug
(6) 3J-1907 O-Ring Seal

  1. Loosen seat (4) by first loosening the M5 nut (3). Using a 2.5 mm allen wrench, back out the seat fully.

  2. Tighten plug (5) to a torque of 48 ± 5 N·m (35 ± 4 lb ft).

    Note: Never tighten plug (5) to the specified torque without first backing out seat (4) fully. Failure to do so will result in seat (4) to ball (1) damage.

  3. Tighten seat (4) to a torque of 2.25 ± 0.25 N·m (20 ± 2 lb in).

  4. Use a 2.5 mm allen wrench to prevent seat (4) from turning, and tighten the M5 nut (3) to a torque of 4 ± 0.5 N·m (35 ± 4.4 lb in).
